Incandescent Lamps (Reptile Breeding Series), is a very specific branch of incandescent bulb which is used in Reptile Breeding. They use incandescent lighting mechanism to create light source similar to light spectrum, which contains a visible light spectrum, an infra-red light of wavelength within 700-100nm as well as a UV spectrum. Infra-red is the light source which has a high efficiency is generating heat, which is used to keep cold blooded reptile or amphibian warm, supporting their thermoregulations and metabolism, while UV stimulate appetite and the immune system. Usually, reptile breeding bulb are in A, R, BR or PAR shapes, which their power rating ranges from 25W to 150W. Reptile Breeding bulb can be seen in almost all E26 | E27 Edison based, while optional bayonet base such as B22d are also available.

The reptile breeding bulb uses same working mechanism as incandescent bulb or lamp which the source of electric light that works by incandescence, which is the emission of light caused by heating the filament until it glows. The filament is enclosed in a glass bulb with a vacuum or inert gas to protect the filament from oxidation. It usually contains a stem or glass mount attached to the bulb's base which allows the electrical contacts to run through the envelope without gas/air leaks. Small wires embedded in the stem support the filament and/or its lead wires. Current is supplied to the filament by terminals or wires embedded in the glass. A bulb socket provides mechanical support and electrical connections. They require no external regulating equipment like driver or ballast, and work equally well on either alternating current or direct current.

Reptile breeding bulb has low pricing comparable to incandescent bulb, except the bulb body have different style of coloring or material. The first one is a frosted glass material with more diffused lighting, which is quite similar to standard clear incandescent. We also have red painted color shell which enhance the emission of infra-red for better heating effect. The most special one uses neodymium glasses which looks blue in color. This could effectively absorb yellow to orange spectrum emit from the filament, but shifting the energy to 1000nm infra-red and UVA spectrum. They require no driver or external device to power on, and they are always fully dimmable with no warm up period and flickering, no matter they are designed as AC or DC input.

A wild reptile typically spends many hours a day basking in the sun, absorbing ultraviolet (UV) light, which support their vitamin D3 synthesis required for proper calcium absorption from food. Vitamin D3 is manufactured in the skin and failure to provide UV light can predispose a pet reptile to nutritional metabolic bone disease, an overly common condition of pet reptiles that is fatal if not recognized and treated. The reptile breeding bulb emit both UVB range (290-320nm) and UVA light (320-400nm) light, which UVB range is more vital for D3 Vitamin synthesis. Without proper UV light exposure, reptiles routinely develop severe, life-threatening illness. Therefore, it is critical for reptile owners to learn about their reptile species’ specific UV needs and set up their pets’ enclosures accordingly.

There are light bulbs with different spectrums of UV light that are available for different types of reptiles, according to their needs. The UV output of a bulb decreases with age, so bulbs should be replaced every six months to ensure sufficient emission. As UV penetration is weak in most medium, it must reach the pet in an unfiltered form with no glass or plastic between the pet and the light. Also, the light should be within approximately 12 inches (30 cm) from the reptile for him to receive any benefit.

Reptile breeding bulb is necessary for all reptile owners if you found sufficient and regular outdoor sunshine is hardly achieved. Bulb could provide supplement to the shortfall for most reptile owner to avoid diseases due to lack in sunlight exposure. They are usually found to be used in pet shops or clinics with reptiles or amphibians.
